2009 Activity Log

Kokanee Power and its members are involved with many projects throughout the year beyond the eight derbies in California and four in Oregon. Here's a quick synopsis of some of the 2009 activities that have been featured previously on the Kokanee Power What's Happening section on the Home page. Many of our projects are documented in our Photo Galleries or Message Forums where you can see and read first hand reports of many of these events.

Shasta Lake Pen Plants - Dec. 16th, 2009 - All the trout pens were planted at the participating resorts which include Sugarloaf Cottages, Tsasdi Resort, Antlers and Holiday Harbor. Thanks to the volunteers that helped work with the DFG to help get these plants done which is a bucket brigade experience.

Kokanee Power Oregon Expo Pond Cleanup - Dec. 10th, 2009 - Volunteers from Kokanee Power of Oregon led the way to help clean up some local urban ponds that could be used for fishing. Click on the link for details.

Kokanee Egg Hatching Complete - Dec. 8th, 2009 - All of the Kokanee eggs at the Friant and other hatcheries they were distributed to have hatched. Thanks to the local volunteers that continue to help with the process every year.
New Melones Brown Trout Stocking - Nov. 6th, 2009 - The annual pen cleaning and stocking was done and this year both pens were stocked with Brown Trout which will be released in the Spring.
Lake Almanor Pen Stocking - In October the 10 Kokanee Power Lake Almanor Pens were stocked by the Almanor Fishing Association Volunteers. Click on the link for further details on this project.
Taylor Creek Egg Collection #3 - Oct. 22nd, 2009 - Kokanee Power and Project Kokanee volunteers worked with the DFG for the Kokanee egg take which netted around 387,000 eggs.
Taylor Creek Egg Collection #2 - Oct. 20th, 2009 - Little Truckee flows were too high due to recent storm so this egg take moved to Taylor Creek. Kokanee Power and Project Kokanee volunteers worked with the DFG for the Kokanee egg take which netted around 766,000 eggs.
  Little Truckee Egg Collection #1 - Oct. 7th, 2009 - Kokanee Power and Project Kokanee volunteers worked with the DFG for the Kokanee egg take which netted around 600,000 eggs. All eggs are sent to the San Joaquin Friant Hatchery for processing.
Scottish Rite Kids Fishing Derby - Shaver Lake - June 7th, 2009 - At Shaver Lake each year the Scottish Rite of Fresno hosts a spectacular fishing derby at Shaver Lake. Proceeds from this derby support the Scottish Rite Center for Language Disorders – a center designed to give kids the extra attention they need to cope with learning and language disorders. Kokanee Power has been donating to this special event for several years.

Kokanee Power of Oregon "Hooked on Fishing" - June 6th, 2009 - KP of Oregon provided volunteer help as well as the snack lunch for this event at Foster Lake near Sweet Home Oregon. Click on the link for details of the event.

C.A.S.T. for Kids event at New Melones Reservoir - June 6th, 2009 - KP donated again towards this "Catch A Special Thrill" event, $1,000. More importantly KP members donated their time and boats to get disabled and dis-advantaged kids a chance to go fishing for a day with the event volunteers.

Hooked on Fishing Lake Yosemite - June 6th, 2009 - Kokanee Power donates to the "Hooked on Fishing" derby at Lake Yosemite as well as provides some volunteer resources for those with special needs. This was the 5th year in a row Kokanee Power has contributed to this event. Click on the event for more information and photos of this year's event.
Take a Kid Fishing in the City - May 1, 2009 - Kokanee Power participated again this year in this wonderful event for the kids and donated money and volunteer resources for this event.
New Melones Pen Release - April 27th, 2009 - The trophy trout that were fattened up over the winter from the Fall 08 pen stocking were released. Click on the link for coverage and photos of this event.
Hatcheries Release Kokanee Smolts - The Kokanee smolts were released by the hatcheries the 2nd week of April. The Friant Hatchery volunteers said goodbye to their 3-4 inch youngsters that were raised since egg collection in October 2008.
Shasta Lake Pen Plant - The Shasta Lake pen plant occurred Jan 30th a bit late due to low water conditions but the fish will get a few months to fatten up until released in the spring.
