Shasta Lake Trout Derby Action 10-13-11 to 10-16-11

With the big salmon in the river it was a tough call to break out that trout tackle but I love Lake Shasta fishing and what better excuse is their than to go to the annual Fall derby. The lake was only 50 feet down this fall, the highest it has been in a number of years. Jenna teamed up with me for some fantastic trout action that was off the hook at times with surface action and fish down to 30 feet, mostly on spoons in various sizes and colors.

The bigger fish we wanted for derby purposes were at the 2lb mark and around 17 to 18 inches. The lake was boiling with shad all over the place and the trout were terrorizing them on the feed which meant for some great action. In the end Jenna and I managed to slip into 4th place which is our best Shasta finish over the years. Here's some pics of the adventure......

We spent a lot of time around this area....which is pretty well known...



Trout were plentiful and had full tails which made for some great fights on light tackle...



Jenna kept up the pace with lots of action....



Once in a while these oddball fish were pestering us... not what youu want in a trout derby!



Instead we wanted more of these....



And Jenna was plenty happy with these two....



Lots of fish had shad bellies... stuffed with 1 inch shad... This was one of our prettiest fish for the adventure....

Those are some nice looking full tail trout. Looks like the weather cooperated too.

Kevin, Nice post glad to see you placed well. Kevin and I had a great time seeing everyone and the fishing was great too. It was like fishing the May derby with good weather and the water level and fish sitting high. Hope to see more people in May as those who did not attend missed out on some great weather, friends and trout action. -Trophy Bait Hunter

Tks guys... The stars were aligned about 11:30 Sunday for us when the bite finally turned on,opposite of Sat where it was on fire early. It sure was nice to get full tailed trout that fight like they are 4lbrs.
