*** THE DATE IS SET! NEXT TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11 ***

John will contact the volunteers, or please contact John. He has the details. Here are the basics: Meet at "the ridge" on Highway 89 north of I-80 next Tuesday morning at 7:30AM. This is "Penny Pines" I believe.

There are now roughly 2,000 fish in the Little Truckee trap just upriver from Stampede. It was snowing up there today but the weather is to break and clear up over the weekend.

The DFG advises that we should prepare for more than the usual three trips this year. More than one trip may be required to Taylor Creek later on.

Here we go.... Have a ball!

Besides waders, what other clothes or gear should we have?

I checked the map on Google, including topo map and I can't seem to find the meeting location. Can anyone clear it up? John told me we have to 4-wheel into the site. I don't have a 4-wheeler...just a motor home.
Can my wife and I catch a ride with anyone from the meeting spot? We'll be coming from Reno. Hope it works out.

Monte. The turnoff is Penny pines ohv off 89 west between truckee and sieraville. It is a narrow off road trail. You won't find it on google map.You will see a sign there.Yes you can park and catch a ride with someone else.Dress warm. You can always take some clothes off if you get too warm.

OK...that narrows it down to 24 miles of road between Truckee and Sierraville. Is it before Henness Pass Rd. or after, closer to Sierraville? Sorry to ask so many questions, but my wife has to take a day off work to do this, and I want to be able to find it. Thanks!

Here's a very specific route to getting there with two different views, click on these links and it will take you to google maps:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=CA-26 ... 3&t=h&z=12

or a direct street view as this is the place here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=CA-26 ... 14.43,,0,0

Essentially 8.4 miles from the the 89 turnoff... it's on a bit of a ridge and if you pass it and start to see meadows and a farm house you have gone to far. I missed it the first time a few years ago. There is a sign back off the road on the right where you should see cars. Keep in mind this is a 4x4 narrow trail so don't plan on taking a big fat vehicle down the path unless you are adventurous.

Here's an exact picture of the place where people park...

Kevin,

Thank you very much! We're on the road now...in a hotel in Reno. This is just the info we needed to make the connection.
We're in a big motorhome, but will show up anyway and try to bum a ride from the parking area with someone who has space in their 4WD. Thanks again!

Sounds like you are equipped. I know when I took my kids a few years back they had a blast. It is likely there are going to be multiple collections this year and the one at Taylor creek is an easier access one overall but I liked the rugged nature of the Little Truckee Collection as it is remote. I won't make this event.

First egg take a success!

This just in: The first kokanee egg collection for 2011 was successful. Everyone got back into Sacramento about 6PM this evening. River flows were up because of the recent rain which made for rough conditions but the initial estimate put the egg take at around 500,000. More accurate numbers will be available in the next day or so.

The weir/trap will be checked again this Friday for additional fish. There will not be another collection this week.

Check back right here for the latest information.

And a big THANK YOU to all who travelled today to help out. You make a difference.

THE LATEST INFO!!! HOT OFF THE PRESS!!!

I JUST hung up the phone. The Friant Hatchery folks are ecstatic. I received a call from both the hatchery supervisor and the Region 4, Hatcheries Manager.

They are very pleased with Kokanee Power and its members. Director Jake Flohr had a crew together and was there all day beginning the sorting and culling process. Hat's off to those guys!

The eggs are in great shape and they travelled well. AND.....yesterday's take was 680,960 eggs! This is nearly 200,000 more than expected! There are big smiles all over the place!

Stayed tuned for the next one! Thanks,

Just back from a great tourney at Shasta Lake. What a fun place. Catching up and....

Sorry about the short notice but there will be a second egg collection THIS WEDNESDAY (October 19th) at Taylor Creek. This is at the Southwest end of Lake Tahoe, NOT ON THE LITTLE TRUCKEE ABOVE STAMPEDE!

Folks should meet at 7:30 AM at the Snow Park parking lot just north of the Taylor Creek bridge. Great weather and a fun trip!

Check back here for more details tomorrow or call Director John Lico @ 707.246.7171
