2008 Kokanee Plants, Actuals, Region 4

Hello to all,

Below is an example of the raw data we receive from the DFG concerning any number of things, this one being the actual 2008 kokanee plant numbers for Region 4. I thought you would find it interesting beyond having the final numbers for a couple of reasons.

First off, take a look at the size of the fish. Over the years, kokanee at planting have averaged well over 200 fish to the pound, sometimes 300! The fish this year were comparatively huge. This should decrease mortality rate and time will tell if the end product in 2010 yields correspondingly larger mature fish.

I’m always excited when a new impoundment is planted. It’s been a while since we’ve had enough fish to enjoy any expansion. Lake Isabella has been on the list for several years and finally got its first plant on April 9th. While Isabella, northeast of Bakersfield, is not just around the corner for most, it is something else to consider for a “something new to do” in 2010. From what I hear, it’s an extremely fertile lake and the DFG expects the kokanee to do very well there.

Note that the Don Pedro plant is up from last year but still low. There is continuing significant evidence of a self sustaining population at DP and they don’t want to make the mistake of over planting. This is a good thing, yes? Maybe we’ll once again have those 3 lb. kokes that we enjoyed in the late 90’s. I remember the first time I went there with Phil and I flat couldn’t believe the size of those fish.
