Late San Luis report (10/28)

Postby MrDwnRigger » Wed Oct 31, 2007 7:21 pm

Launched at Dinosaur about 7:00AM Sunday. First thing ran over to the trash racks, hoping there would be some water movement. Saw no evidence of them pumping, they must be pumping late at night. Ran two lines down, one with the bomber white with red head and my old standard for SL 6" fire Tiger thunder stick. About 30 minutes into the troll, I'm messing with some of my tackle, and look up and the thunder stick had released. Pick up the rod and fishon. About a 5 pound striper on 8 pound test on one of my trout downrigger rods. Stuck it at about 60 feet, in about 200 feet of water just east of the racks. Released him. Figure there was more to come. Talked to Fish04 on the radio for a bit, he was having engine problems and had to go in.

Well I tried till about noon by the racks and the underwater islands, tried several different lure's and even rolled some shad. Got a good hit on shad just didn't stick. Went back into Portuguese Cove, Waters still too shallow to fish back in there. Marked the small rock pile in Portuguese Cove and marked the large rock pile on the West Bank with the GPS.

Decided I'd troll the face of the dam starting on the south end, went about a 1/4 mile and a rod goes off in about 120 feet of water 90 feet down with a black and silver storm lure. Good fighting striper about 5 pounds 24 inches long. Unfortunately I couldn't get him to go back down from bringing him up from so deep. I've always had problems releasing stripers that are caught over 50 feet down at SL, I think I've figured out a way using two releases to send them back down to the depth they came from. Hopefully I'll get to try it. All in all was a good day, the weather was just beautiful with no wind.

Trash racks, I think it needs about another 30 feet to get good.

deep stripers

Trolling for stripers on a downrigger deep, man that sounds like fun, I live in Vacaville and don't have that around here, the delta we always use the lures that dive and that's only 20 +- ft. I would love to hook a striper at 50-60 ft deep with light gear  Thanks for the visual.
