Lake McClure 6-3-12 - Solid Kokanee Action!

Postby HiTechKoke » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:00 am

Jenna and I hit Lake McClure Sunday with John Minnis after the wonderful Don Pedro Derby. We had very little reconnaissance info other than the King bite has been good and there were Kokes available. It was a Deja-vu moment as we arrived at Barrett Cove like we did about 4 years ago which was the last time I fished McClure. I put one line down at 40 feet and in 30 seconds I had this solid 14 inch fish rattling the lines and in the boat...

A few minutes later Jenna and I doubled up with these beauties....

To get some size perspective here are these fish on the deck against the ruler, almost to 15 inches and FAT! Dare I say these McClure fish are the 2nd best in the state behind Berryessa?

Image

Jenna barely had time to eat some fruit loops and her juicey-juice before she had to reel in another one...

Image

These fish were big time clean chromers...

Image

It was pretty much non-stop action and I never moved more than 100 yards from where we started....

Image

With a cooler full of Silver Bullets.... it was time to go home... this is the way Kokanee Fishing should be... we finished within a few hours with tons of action... and the devil fish got off 3 times before we sealed the deal...

Image

Limit sticks... the fish were 13-15 inches...

I know I'll be back next year and frankly I'd like to go back and get some more if it wasn't such a drive from the Bay area. One reason I think the fish are bigger than some of the other Lakes is the water is a rich algae/plankton green color with about 10-15 foot of visibility vs Pedro for example where the water was much clearer and visibility 20 to 25 feet. These McClure Kokes are definitely worth the time to chase.

Launched at Barrett's...ran down to where the A-frame is located, 35-55 feet. They loved orange and the UL hot belly and RMT Pink Assassin took care of business. With these tips I'll expect a report of your success. :D

Nice report Kevin,
Well now I know I should've followed you over instead of sleeping in. I'm sure the boys that fish McClure regularly don't want your reports from their secret Lake. Looks like you had the Lake pretty much to yourself, how was coming out of the ramp after fishin? May have to get over there this summer and check it out. Definitely will follow John and You over next year after the Derby. Nice pictures, are those straight out of the camera or did we do a little enhancing? Great colors and contrast.

Too bad were not having a Derby there, hint, hint !!

There was virtually nobody fishing, saw 2 boats within our area and not sure they were even fishing for Kokanee. Only saw 2 water skiers by the time we pulled it and the ramp was 100% clear for launch and take out as John and I pulled out. There was one water skier launching so can't complain. It was a Sunday though. Definitely would like to head back and take the on again in a month.

Those are pictures straight out of my iPhone 4s... No enhancements. It takes pretty good pictures...8MP.

Nice pics and sounds like fun. I will have to try that lake one day. Your daughter is growing up. Bella is now about as big as your younger daugther used to be.
