Shasta King Salmon Plant Identification

Postby HiTechKoke » Sat Oct 30, 2010 5:37 am

Monty Currier, DFG Associate Biologist, sent us this useful information to share with everyone and some photos as well. It is very good info should you catch a fish with a tag or clipped adipose fin and want to know what year class it was planted. Here's Monty's info and pictures....

Recent Chinook salmon being stocked at Lake Shasta and a
photo of a 2+ year old Chinook caught by an angler at Shasta. As you can
see in the photo the Chinook I am holding is missing the adipose fin. I
have done a mass marking of most Chinook that have been stocked into Shasta
for the past three years.
These are the clips/marks I have used on the Shasta Chinook.

2008-Adipose fin clipped
2009-Right Maxillary (upper lip) clip
2010-Right Ventral clip (right belly) clip

I am letting your members know this information so they can see for
themselves how to separate Shasta Chinook year classes. Most of our Chinook
go into the water at around 6 inches at about 10 fish =1 pound of weight. We
usually stock in October to November. Attached is a photo of our hatchery
truck planting the Chinook at Shasta.

Thanks for all that you and your members do to make fishing better in
California.
Regards,
Monty Currier
